Kimberley Toad Busters
I refer to the exceptional work being carried out by the Kimberley Toad Busters, which is reported to have caught in excess of 339 000 mature adult cane toads. Given the cane toads are said to be now located within 20 kilometres of the Western Australian-Northern Territory border, what financial or other support is the government providing to the Kimberley Toad Busters? Hon DONNA FARAGHER

I thank the member for his question. Cane toads are a very significant environmental issue. As the member has correctly stated, the cane toad front is approximately 20 kilometres east of the Western Australian-Northern Territory border. In October this year, as one of my first priorities as environment minister, I visited the Kimberley to gain firsthand experience on the front. I travelled with the Kimberley Toad Busters and the Minister for Health, Hon Kim Hames, just across the Northern Territory border. Hon Ken Travers : Do you have to read it? Can’t you remember — Hon DONNA FARAGHER : It was done on notice. An opposition member interjected. Hon DONNA FARAGHER : I am more than happy to, if the member would like. Overnight, the group caught some 3 000-odd cane toads. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich : Did you catch one? Hon DONNA FARAGHER : I certainly did, Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich. I actually caught more than one; I caught quite a few. While in the Kimberley, I reaffirmed the Liberal Party’s election commitment of $1.2 million over four years to provide much-needed certainty and support for the work of the Kimberley Toad Busters. This funding will provide resources for the Kimberley Toad Busters to continue its program of on-ground field work. This will also be backed up by the development of toad-busting kits for local community groups and schools. The Department of Environment and Conservation will be working with the Kimberley Toad Busters to develop these kits for the local communities. I applaud the efforts of all community volunteers in this state who are working to prevent and minimise the damage that cane toads cause to our environment. As the member has noted, the Kimberley Toad Busters must be commended for their commitment and determination to slow the advance of cane toads into the state and for their efforts to coordinate monitoring operations and collect valuable data on the toads. I look forward to seeing the progress of this group in the future, and I am sure that without the efforts of the Kimberley Toad Busters and other community groups and volunteers, cane toads could have become established in the Kimberley before now.
