(1) Will the minister inform the Parliament whether the Department for Community Development is aware of the five babies in prams who were abandoned in a local beer garden in Halls Creek and if the parents of these children have been contacted by the department’s child protection workers? (2) Does that district have access to any or the 14 special workers allocated to deal with difficult “at risk” families? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The department understands that the publican has reported that up to five babies were left; however, it is not the case that five babies were abandoned on one occasion. When the police were asked for the names of the parents, they were unable to provide the details. What is important to stress is that the Department for Community Development has worked intensively with community people, the police and the public and together they are developing strategies to keep children safe. The Department for Community Development will be running a child safety workshop for community people at the upcoming Grog and Justice Summit being held from the 28 September to 30 September 2004 at Mulan community within the Halls Creek Shire. (2) The Department for Community Development in Halls Creek has an indigenous team leader, a Gordon child protection worker, two indigenous field officers and an indigenous customer service officer. In addition an Aboriginal support worker and an indigenous early years project officer provide regular services to Halls Creek and surrounding communities.
