Burswood Park Motorplex
519. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Premier:
I refer to the
racetrack project at Burswood.
(1) Has the Premier seen the business case?
(2) If yes to (1), is the cost still $217.5 million?
(3) Will the Premier confirm what the Treasurer
has said repeatedly—that the state government has no plans to purchase
or acquire any additional land for the racetrack?

(1)–(3) The business case—the
designs and other aspects of it—is being finalised, and that is the
appropriate way to approach this project. We want to make sure that it
represents value for money and provides great amenity to the people of Western
Australia. I am not quite sure why the Leader of the Opposition is necessarily
raising these issues ahead of those issues being finalised because we know that
he supports it. We all know that he supports this. In fact, he undertook
meetings when he was the mayor to find out what it
was about and how he could get involved. If he has had a change of heart, he
should be honest with the people of Western Australia.
Several
members interjected.
The Speaker: Members!
Mr Roger Cook: Has he also had a change of heart in running
the $2 billion Commonwealth Games? Has he also had a change of heart in reconstructing
the Bell Tower in the middle of the river?
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition!
Mr Roger Cook: Has he had a change of heart and
believes that the future of Perth is running a dance festival? Has he had a
change of heart and regrets closing down a homeless women's shelter? Has he had
a change of heart and no longer opposes a much-needed new primary school in
East Perth for families in that area? Has he had a change of heart in opposing
the upgrades to the WACA Ground and the swimming pool that came with it? Has he
had a change of heart in opposing everything?
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt! Leader of
the Opposition, you have asked the question. The Premier is responding. If you
keep interjecting, you will not get a supplementary.
Mr Roger Cook: The Leader of the Opposition has it
both ways. He is here, he is there, depending on the last person he speaks to.
When the details of this project are ready to be made public, obviously we will
do that.
