INDUSTRIAL
ACCIDENT — HENDERSON
595. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Minister for Commerce:
I refer to the crane
accident at the Titan facility in Quill Way, Henderson this morning, which is
the second incident at the same workplace this week.
(1) What action has WorkSafe taken in relation
to both incidents that have occurred at the same location this week?
(2) Does WorkSafe provide the minister with
briefing reports when accidents such as this occur in workplaces in WA?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice
of this question.
(1)–(2) Yes,
I am aware of both of these regrettable incidents that occurred this week. The
first one involved a crane that was being transported to a corner of the
facility for the purposes of some maintenance work and it toppled over. No-one
was injured, as I understand it. In the second one that occurred this morning,
there was some minor injury to the operator and he was taken to hospital, I
believe, for observation. WorkSafe stopped work at the site insofar as it was
relevant to those incidents and is investigating both matters, and I expect to
receive a report in due course. I do not receive briefings on an
officer-to-minister basis, but I am informed of incidents of this character in
order that I can make any necessary direction that is required in respect of
them. So, I will be watching for the results of that investigation. It does
seem odd that there were two crane incidents in the same week. It may be a
purely accidental coincidence, but if there is a systemic problem, I will be
directing WorkSafe to look into it.
