MUSEUM — RELOCATION
I refer to the relocation of the Western Australian Museum staff and collections to Welshpool in 2003, and the lack of public access to researchers, scientists and working collections. (1) Will the proposed new Museum contain accommodation for researchers and scientists, including laboratories and storage for working collections? (2) If no to (1), how will the public be able to engage with core Museum researchers and scientists and their working collections, given that this is now a worldwide trend in museums development? (3) Is the new Museum intended to be an exhibition centre, with some education facilities and lecture theatres for Museum staff visiting from Welshpool to deliver public programs? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The minister has advised as follows. (1) Planning for the construction of Western Australia’s fantastic new $500 million Museum of the twenty-first century is underway. The state-of-the-art facilities at the collection and research centre at Welshpool will continue to house the state’s collection of more than four million objects and be the Museum’s central research and scientific facility. (2) The new Museum will feature world-class education and lecture facilities, providing the highly qualified Museum staff with even more opportunity to engage with the public through education, school programs and lecture series. Special interest groups and individuals will also continue to be able to engage with core Museum researchers and scientists at the collection and research centre. (3) Yes.
