Public schools—Prohibited weapons
231. Hon Anthony Spagnolo to the Leader of the
House representing the Minister for Education:
I ask this question
without notice on behalf of Hon Tjorn Sibma, who is out of the chamber on
urgent parliamentary business.
I refer to WA public
schools.
(1) How many incidents were recorded in which a
student brought a prohibited weapon as defined under the Weapons Act 1999 onto public school premises in
each of the following school years:
(a) 2024;
(b) 2023;
(c) 2022; and
(d) 2021?
(2) Does the department divide prohibited weapons
into different categories of prohibited weapons; and, if yes to (2), what are
these categories?
(3) For each of the categories of prohibited
weapons listed in 2, will the minister please provide a breakdown of how many
were brought onto WA public school premises in the following school years:
(a) 2024;
(b) 2023;
(c) 2022; and
(d) 2021?
The President: I might remind the honourable member of
standing order 105 in relation to concise nature. The Leader of the House.

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and acknowledge his first
question, albeit that he is asking on behalf of someone who is away from the
chamber on urgent parliamentary business. I am advised that due to the large
amount of data requested, the minister asks the honourable member to please
place this question on notice. The minister notes that a question requesting
this data is currently on notice in the other place, question 59.
I might just say on
behalf of the government to new members who are here today—obviously,
everybody is welcome—if you are asking for a lot of data, the chances
are you will not get an answer in this short timeframe, so you will be asked to
put it on notice. I am sure the staff will tell you. A simple way to put it on
notice is that when the answer is given back to you, add your signature to it
and give it to a chamber staff member, and it will be entered into the system.
