Will the minister provide the Parliament with the following information in relation to Monica McGhie, an artist who was born without arms and legs. She has also adopted me in the “adopt a politician” scheme. (1) When can Monica McGhie expect to have the modifications to her new motorised adapted wheelchair ready for use? She has already had a four-year wait. (2) Will the minister confirm that the lack of resources at Shenton Park Rehabilitation Centre has contributed to the delay? (3) What is the estimated cost of this specially designed chair and is the cost another factor in the delay? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) It is difficult to predict with accuracy when modifications to Ms McGhie’s new motorised adapted wheelchair will be ready for use. The urinary device is an adjunct to the wheelchair project, and must take priority dictated by demand on the rehabilitation engineering clinic for specialised custom devices related to the primary mobility needs of a wide range of severely disabled patients referred to the service. Whilst an accurate time frame cannot be stipulated, it is envisaged that the modifications may be completed by December 2005. (2) The REC employs one rehabilitation engineer who is responsible for the design of specialised projects. The position is also responsible for the overall management of the service. (3) The estimated cost of the wheelchair is approximately $200 000. Funding for this has been provided in part by the REC and community aids equipment program funds.
