Metronet
55. Mr Steve Catania to
the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the Cook
Labor government's commitment to delivering Metronet and world-class public
transport.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Sorry, member for Midland.
Members of the opposition, the questions will be heard in silence. Start again,
member for Midland.
Mr Steve Catania: I refer to the Cook Labor
government's commitment to delivering Metronet and world-class public
transport. Can the minister outline to the house what this investment means to
the community and how the government continues to back in our suburbs by delivering
world-class infrastructure?

I thank the member
for the question. I really wished some members of the opposition were there on
Sunday to see—

The Speaker: Members!
Ms Rita Saffioti: —the thousands of people who
rocked up to celebrate the new Midland train station. Of course, the member for
Midland was there and—

Ms Rita Saffioti: —thousands of people came to
watch and be part of the historic day of the opening of the brand-new Midland
train station. Over 7,000 people turned up. They recognised and celebrated that
WA Labor delivered that new train station. As part of that train station, there
is the new walkway that crosses the rail tracks; the 800-bay car park—the
member for Midland—

The Speaker: Members!
Ms Rita Saffioti: —said it was over three-quarters
full this morning when he parked his vehicle; a 12-vehicle bus interchange; a
new principle shared path that is on its way to being completed; development
blocks for housing; and a brand-new heart of Midland. As I said, thousands of
people turned up to celebrate an incredible day. There have been 23 new rail
stations and 72 kilometres of track delivered and 15 level crossings removed,
and development sites are being created across the site.
Members could hear
just how sad and pitiful the Liberal–National opposition is when it
comes to public transport. What is its policy? It did not build the Ellenbrook
rail line, and it cancelled MAX light rail and new trains. In fact, their
response reminds me of Nelson Muntz from The
Simpsons . That is its level of debate when it comes to transport or any
policy. It stands on the sideline and wants to commentate. You know what? It irritates
everybody, not only Bart Simpson.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt, I am going
to call you for the first time.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member
for Central Wheatbelt, I am going to call you for the second time. Do not keep conversations
going across the chamber.
Ms Rita Saffioti: I find it interesting that the
opposition wants to talk about polling today. Of everything I thought it would
interject on, polling was not it. If the opposition wants to talk about
polling, let us talk about polling. What is the Liberal Party and National
Party approach to public transport? They hate it. They have told the people in
the suburbs they do not deserve quality public transport or the one-zone fare
cap. They keep telling the people of the suburbs that, and they know it, as we
saw on the weekend. There have been 23 new rail stations and 72 kilometres of
track delivered, and 15 level crossings removed, plus hectares of new land for
housing development.

The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe, please stop
interjecting. Minister, if you want to wrap up your response, please.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Sure. I will wrap up with this final
comment about the member for Cottesloe, who found a train station during her
election campaign and said somehow—

The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe, please stop
interjecting.
Ms Rita Saffioti: —the train station was too
far from the beach and she wants to create a whole policy about connecting it.
I mean, it is like they just make these things—
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Member for Landsdale!
Ms Rita Saffioti: I again refer members to Nelson
Muntz and just how sad and pitiful the opposition is.
