ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
AUTHORITY — CARBON TAX
512. Mr W.R. MARMION to the Premier :
I have a supplementary question. I thank
the Premier for his answer. Will the Premier immediately commit to ruling out
any emissions abatement target set by the EPA and commit to the Morrison
government's national emissions reduction target?

I spoke to the Prime Minister
yesterday about the federal government's renewable energy target. It
remains committed to the renewable energy target, as we do. Did the member ask
about the federal government's emissions reduction target?
Mr W.R. Marmion : I want to
know what you're doing about the EPA's emissions target. Is the
Premier committing to it?
Mr M. McGOWAN : The government
is not going to introduce a carbon tax. We will work cooperatively with
industry to reduce emissions. It is good for industry to reduce emissions, and
it is good for government and good for the world if we all work cooperatively
on these issues. One of the things we want to do is to work cooperatively to
bring some of those important gas projects to Western Australia, which of
course produce less than half the emissions of comparable energy projects that
might emerge from the east, or China, or wherever it might be. We see that as a
benefit. I think it is pretty clear that that is a benefit, if we can
substitute gas for some other forms of energy production in China and Japan and
places of that nature that have huge emissions issues and huge pollution
issues. We are working cooperatively with industry. I really do not know what
the Deputy Leader of the Opposition was referring to.
