GENETICALLY MODIFIED CANOLA — PLANTING MAPS
My questions relate to the planting of genetically modified canola. (1) Has the Minister for Agriculture and Food committed to making available to the public a map or maps that show the location of this season’s planting of genetically modified canola? (2) If yes to (1), when and where will these maps be available? (3) If these maps are not available imminently, how will non-GM farmers be informed of the location of GM crops that may pose a risk to the non-GM status of their crops? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The minister has provided the following answers — (1) No; I committed the Department of Agriculture and Food to build the capacity of its geographic information services to more accurately reflect the location of farmers using GM technology, organic farmers and other sensitive land uses. Information provided by farmers will be publicly available on the department’s website (2) Not applicable. (3) I also committed to write to all GM canola growers to impress on them their responsibility to adhere to stewardship protocols, including the need to notify their neighbours of their use of GM technology. The outcomes of the 2009 GM canola trials showed that the Western Australian grains industry could effectively segregate GM canola from non-GM canola. Hon Giz Watson : It didn’t show that all! Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich : They just make it up!
