I refer the Premier to the alarming degradation of the Swan River and his comment reported in The West Australian of 28 May - The Swan River is a WA icon and for that reason we will take all these issues very seriously. (1) Does the Premier agree with the comments on ABC radio this morning by Mr Andrew Cribb from the Department of Fisheries that the Swan River is now an ecological disaster and that urgent and immediate action needs to be taken? (2) Given that approximately 100 000 fish have already been killed, and with further fish kills predicted, what action has the Premier taken or what advice has he sought to fix the problem? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) The Government takes the question of the health of the Swan River very seriously. Indeed, in the debate that will be held in this Parliament very soon, the Minister for the Environment and Heritage will outline the steps the Government is taking to address the matter. It is a long-standing and complex issue and will require consistent reform to bring about change in the river. Reference was made on the radio this morning to the regulation of fishing in the Swan River. No proposal to that end has been brought to the Government. If a serious proposal comes to it, the Government will give it serious attention.
