The current use of Taser in the Western Australia Police is governed by Police Manual Policy FR-1.6. Taser. The policy is documented within the agency's Operational Manual and under the generic framework entitled Force Options; it is therefore also subject to the guidelines governing of Use of Force generally.
Amongst other things, the Policy FR 1.6 states the specific risks which emerge from the deployment of a Taser and operators are reminded that in order to minimise the risk of potential injury "
not to deploy in the near vicinity of flammable liquids or fumes".
It should be remembered that in addition to this specific policy an officer when legally justified may select any force option dependant on their perception of the situation and the preclusion of use of other force options.
Existing agency policy with regard to the use of Taser is currently subject of review as part of the WA Police Post Implementation Review of Taser.
