I refer to the $7.032 million allocated in the 2010-11 Budget, for English as a second language support for the children of 457 visa holders, and ask -
(1) Has the funding allocation for individual schools/language centres been finalised?
(2) If yes to (1), please provide details of which schools/language centres will receive this funding, and how much they will receive.
(3) Please provide detail of what the funding will be used for?

(1) Yes. Funding for individual schools and Intensive English Centres that currently have students who recently arrived on temporary visa 457 have been allocated funding.
Further funding will be made to individual schools and Intensive English Centres as more students on temporary visa 457 enrol, up until June 2011.
(2) Schools receive a $2 000 per capita grant payment for students who have recently arrived on temporary visa 457. So far 171 schools have received this grant and the total funding allocated to these schools is $810 000. See Attachment 1 for a list of schools that have received this funding to date [see tabled paper no].
Currently there are 191 students on temporary visa 457 enrolled in Intensive English Centres. Across the 13 Intensive English Centres approximately $1.2m in additional staffing and resources has been allocated.
Schools listed in Attachment 2 that enrol students who have recently arrived on temporary visa 457 will also have access to professional learning opportunities and curriculum support materials [see tabled paper no].
As funding may be allocated up until June 2011, a total dollar amount cannot be provided at this time.
(3) Funding is being used to:
· provide direct grants to schools with numbers of recently arrived students;
· expand existing Intensive English Centres;
· provide professional learning for school staff; and
· provide teachers with additional ESL specialist learning and teaching support resources.
