PERTH CITY DEAL
141. Mr G. BAKER to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the McGowan Labor
government's investment in the new inner-city campus at Edith Cowan
University and the new Swan River Bridge as part of the Perth City Deal.
(1) Can the
minister update the house on the progress of the Perth City Deal, including how
the government is addressing challenges in the construction and labour markets?
(2) Can the
minister outline to the house how the McGowan Labor government's
relationship with the commonwealth government compares with that of the Liberal–National
opposition's relationship with the commonwealth government?

(1)–(2) It has been quite an eventful day actually. We
have been out and about with the Premier and the Prime Minister in Victoria Park to announce the successful
contractor for the new pedestrian cycling bridge. It is Civmec, a very
proud and well known Western Australian manufacturer who built and developed
the Matagarup Bridge. A Western Australian
company has won the contract to build this new pedestrian bridge.
A member interjected: Not in
Malaysia?
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : They are not
in Malaysia and not overseas. Of course, it is an iconic bridge. It is six
metres wide and facilitates use for over 3 000 pedestrians and cyclists who
currently use the causeway. They will be able to
use this brand new bridge, which will make their trip safer and encourage more
people to cycle, e-scooter and walk into
the city. We also announced further updates on the new Edith Cowan University
campus. This university campus is a game changer for the City of Perth.
With both projects there have been some cost issues and we are working together with the federal government as part of
this budget process—with a state budget coming and a federal budget coming in a couple of weeks' time—to secure as much money as we
can from this federal government for our projects. I am really delighted that
we have been able to work to make sure that the ECU campus can go ahead in the
city.
One thing has been striking about
the past few days. The Prime Minister was keen to be at the event today, but he
was not so keen to be seen near the Leader of the Liberal Party. You wonder
why? Yesterday, it was demonstrated, was it not? We know now why the leader the
Liberal Party did not stand up to ''The Clan'' and those sexist
and misogynistic comments from its members, because yesterday he showed his
true colours in this place. He even went out
and tried to dispute that today. He said to the Minister for Health, ''I
will patronise you, minister.'' He then went on and said that
that minister worries more about fashion than she does about doing her job in
health. They were disgraceful comments made
by the Leader of the Liberal Party—sexist, disgraceful comments! The
Leader o f the National Party—the Leader of the Opposition—has
refused to condemn those comments, members, once again. I remember what has
been done in this place. The standards that you have asked of other people in
this place you are not actually applying to
members in your party. They were disgraceful, sexist comments. It is no wonder
that the Liberal Party cannot attract women to their party. It is no
wonder that the Labor Party has such a strong representation of women in our
party. Yet again, we see the true colours of the Leader of the Liberal Party
and the true colours of the Liberal Party. The reason they allow those sexist
and misogynistic comments from ''The Clan'' is because, given the
first opportunity, that is exactly what the Liberal Party does in this place.
