I understand that the Government has developed an online system to assist people who want to apply for vacancies in government agencies. Can the minister provide any data to confirm that this has been a worthwhile initiative? Mr J.C. KOBELKE

I thank the member for the question. The Department of the Premier and Cabinet has implemented a new online electronic recruitment advertising and management system - RAMS - for the Western Australian public sector. Members may be aware that the advertisement in The West Australian for public sector jobs has changed and now takes up a reduced space. However, it also highlights that people can access RAMS through the use of the Internet on jobs.wa.gov.au. RAMS integrates redeployment, voluntary severance, entry-level recruitment and recruitment into one streamlined advertising system. The system is proposed to be enhanced so that from July 2004 agencies will be able to manage job applications electronically right throughout the system. That will enable agencies to fully integrate into a seamless system the advertising, applications and appointments of staff within the public sector. The system is very flexible, and it will fit into the shared services that will be implemented in about mid next year. The Western Australian Government job board, as RAMS is called, went live in January this year. A Western Australian company, Empired Limited, was contracted to implement the system. Empired Limited has been recognised as an industry leader, and only last month it won the product category of the Western Australian Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards. Empired is to be congratulated on winning that award. That also indicates the quality of the system that it has developed. The new system has been very well received by the people of Western Australia. In March the number of unique visitors was over 34 000. By comparison, in February this year, the Victorian Government job board, which has been operating for several years, had only 28 000 hits from people searching for jobs. In addition, in Western Australia over 7 000 job seekers have registered with RAMS and have put their unique search profiles on the job board. That means that when jobs comes up within the public sector that meet the profiles of those applicants, they can be e-mailed the details of those jobs. Jobs.wa.gov.au allows the Western Australian public sector to be promoted as an employer of choice and ensures that we have a far more efficient and effective way of advertising and placing people into jobs in the Western Australian public sector.
