CITY BEACH HIGH SCHOOL SITE - INTERIM RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE
I refer the minister to the plan to develop an interim residential college at the former City Beach high school site. (1) What will be the cost of developing the interim residential college? (2) How long does the lease for the International School of Perth have to run? (3) How much will it cost to develop a permanent residential college? (4) Why is the government willing to spend millions to buy out the current lease and build interim facilities at City Beach, rather than developing a permanent residential college from the start? Hon JON FORD

On behalf of the Minister for Education and Training, I thank the Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The minister has supplied the following answer - (1) It is not anticipated that any capital expenditure will be required to establish an interim residential college at the former City Beach high school site. (2) The existing lease will terminate on 8 December 2006. (3) A budget allocation of $8 million has been provided to develop a permanent residential college at the Perth Modern School site. Detailed planning and a cost estimate for the residential college have not been developed yet. (4) Prior to the establishment of the International School of Perth, a ground lease was formulated between the then education department and the school. Subsequently, the school proceeded to construct residential facilities on the leased land. The terms and conditions of the lease were such that at the time of termination the International School of Perth would be reimbursed the depreciated market value of the residential facilities. A budget allocation of $5 million has been provided to enable the lease to be terminated in December this year.
