DANGEROUS
SEX OFFENDERS
844. Mr J.R. QUIGLEY to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Why are we debating laws
about graffiti today while, after 18 months of promises, the government has not
even introduced laws to deal with dangerous paedophiles?

AnswerView source ↗

I have not been directly involved in the drafting of that
legislation. There are complexities, and, as I said, that legislation will be
introduced during this session of Parliament. The member drew a comparison with
the legislation currently being debated on graffiti. Perhaps he should take a
step back and look at the absolute waste of time this morning on that
legislation, as the opposition repeatedly asked the same question.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : I
want to tell you something. I do not want this wall of noise.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
No-one would dispute that dangerous sex offenders is a more serious issue.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Albany, I call you to order for the first time and the member for
Willagee for the first time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
In terms of the simple functioning of this Parliament, the graffiti vandalism
legislation was ready, and it was introduced, and we just saw deliberate time
wasting this morning. There were two Labor members in here who repeatedly asked
the same question over and again. They ping-ponged between the two of them.
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first time. I suggest you
settle down.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
When the dangerous sex offender legislation comes before the Parliament in this
session, I hope the opposition will deal with it quickly.
