I refer the minister to a media release that she last week issued jointly with the Minister for the Environment and which called for strict control over riverside development. The minister was quoted in an ABC News Online article as saying - “We don’t want to see inappropriate, inconsistent styles of development taking place . . . which really have an impact on the beauty of the foreshore which should be there for all of us to enjoy,” How can the minister justify her decision to scar the Swan River foreshore in the city, South Perth and Como with an electric rail line, or is she simply applying a double standard? Ms MacTIERNAN

That is an interesting question to come from an opposition spokesperson on the environment. I would not have thought that any environmental spokesperson would seriously have thought that it would blight a city or foreshore to remove cars and buses and replace them with a high speed, modern train. The other side has absolutely failed to understand two things, the first being that this rail line will not go along any virgin river foreshore. It will go down the centre of a 14-lane freeway. As we have pointed out time and time again - Mr Barnett: Fourteen? Ms MacTIERNAN: In part, it would be 14 lanes. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! Mr Barnett: Fourteen lanes; you beauty! Ms MacTIERNAN: The freeway would have 14 lanes in parts. If the Government did not put the train down the centre of the freeway, it is anticipated that it would in fact need to create another four lanes on the freeway over the next 10 years. Mr Barnett: It is 18 now! Ms MacTIERNAN: The Government is improving the functionality of Perth. I believe that this development will improve the aesthetics of Perth by liberating the Perth foreshore from an ever-expanding demand by car traffic.
