Building
resilience to violent extremism and preventing harm at the earliest opportunity
are crucial to ensuring Western Australians remain safe. WA's whole of
government effort in this space is underpinned by the WA Government
Countering Violent Extremism Strategy 2026-28. This strategy is led by the
Department of the Premier and Cabinet and supported by a multi-agency
Steering Committee. The strategy sets out a whole of government response to
preventing and countering violent extremism, addressing relevant social
impacts, and supporting disengagement from harmful extremist behaviour.
The WA
Government runs two Commonwealth-funded programs dedicated to countering
violent extremism: the Intervention and Support Program, led by the WA Police
Force; and CVE Services, led by the Department of Justice's Corrective
Services WA. Three-year funding for these programs totals $9.681 million.
The WA Police
Force leads on broader counter terrorism and public safety measures.
The WA
Government works with the Australian Government, states and territories on a
range of national counter terrorism plans and strategies through its
membership on the Australia New Zealand Counter Terrorism Committee. It also
works with a range of Australian Government agencies on matters regarding
social cohesion.
