(1) Equipment stolen - 60
Equipment lost - Nil
There are approximately 15 000 notebooks in the Notebooks for Teachers Program and approximately 700 notebooks in the Notebooks for Students Program at John Willcock College in Geraldton.
(2) Notebooks stolen: 60. The depreciated value - Approximately $60 000 excluding GST. Palm computers stolen - Nil
Notebooks lost - Nil
Palm Computers lost - Nil
(3) There have been no reports of stolen notebook computers containing sensitive information.
(4) Policies are in place for acceptable use, care of infrastructure and corporate information. Notebooks for Teachers Program notebooks are protected by a username/password function to protect user logon accounts.
(5) Yes
(6) The Department requires staff to report thefts as soon as practical following the theft.
(7) In most cases, the outcome is an insurance claim. Recovery of stolen notebooks is rare and the value inconsequential. The approximate value of a recovered notebook is around $100 to $200 and the approximate number recovered is between five and 10 i.e. a value of $500 to $2 000.
(8) Not applicable.
(9) The majority of cases result from home burglaries and theft from private vehicles. The Department and RiskCover have strongly advised that notebook computers are not to be left unattended in an area where it is at risk of being stolen e.g. in the cabin of a motor vehicle.
