MIDLAND HEALTH CAMPUS — PREMIER'S
COMMENTS
410. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I refer to the Premier's comments on radio this
morning about the Midland Health Campus issue that he felt a bit behind the
game that he did not know about this issue until it became public probably 12
months ago.
(1) Why does
the Premier claim that he did not know, considering the contract on these
conditions was awarded two years ago?
(2) Did St
John of God Health Care CEO Michael Stanford not advise the government four
years ago that it was not prepared to provide some services?

Obviously, the issue around those services that the Leader of the Opposition is
referring to was in the contract; it is quite clear. I became aware of the issue,
and particularly its sensitivity, probably a bit over 12 months ago—maybe
closer to 18 months. That was the first time I became conscious of the
sensitivity of the issue.
Ms M.M. Quirk : It
is not part of the ''Bigger Picture''!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
That was a profound comment!
The issue became public; it is a sensitive issue. As the
Minister for Health has said, this will be a fantastic hospital. It is both a
public and a private hospital. Those services will be provided in the area. It
is a public issue and it is still being debated. I became conscious of the
issue about 12 to 18 months ago when it became public.
