I refer to the Liberal Party advertisement in the Mandurah Mail last week claiming that the party had started, and would finish, the southern suburbs railway. Is this consistent with the facts or with the coalition’s public statements on the project? Ms A.J. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for the question. The member was quite rightly stunned when he read the advertisement. I can only presume that the Liberal Party would finish the railway in the same way that it started it. It would finish it by calling it to an end. I am surprised that the gents in the advertisement, who promote the fact of their being married and their reproductive capacity as their number one quality for election, would be prepared to be party to the lies we have seen perpetrated by the Opposition and the National Party. Just in case these people are under any illusion about the position of the coalition of the unwilling, I will take them through it again. The Leader of the Opposition is quoted in the Business News , under the heading “Rail line a costly mistake: Barnett”. The article reads - He said the first stage to be constructed would be a link from Kenwick to Thomson Lake. Only once that was built and operational would the next stage to Rockingham be considered on its merits, as would the next stage to Mandurah. He would build the railway only to Thomsons Lake, and then maybe to Rockingham and then, some time later, maybe to Mandurah. We can see how committed the Liberal Party is to finishing the railway. The Leader of the National Party and erstwhile Deputy Leader of the Opposition had this exchange, in a debate with the Treasurer - Mr E.S. Ripper: Do you support the rail project? Mr M.W. TRENORDEN: No. We will oppose it all the way. Mr E.S. Ripper: You do not support the rail project at all? Mr M.W. TRENORDEN: No. It gets even better when we get to the Liberal Party’s spokesperson on transport, who was quoted in The West Australian on 2 March 2004 as saying - “I support the position that the Nationals have taken and want to get my party room behind me. Can the whole bloody project,” she said. One of the doyens of the Liberal Party in the other place, Hon Peter Foss, said - If the previous Government can be criticised for anything, it is for proposing to extend the railway from Rockingham to Mandurah. The member for Warren-Blackwood said, as quoted in Hansard - I do not agree with the project at all. It is miles ahead of its time. It is an absolute waste of taxpayers’ money. The Government is trying to con the people of Western Australia into believing they need a railway line when they do not. A final contribution comes from Mr Willy Packer, a major benefactor of the Liberal Party, and son-in-law of Harold Clough. This is the view from the compound. He said, on ABC radio - When you leave Thompson’s Lake, on the trip south . . . you’re amongst cattle. Now those cattle aren’t going to be travelling. We see here that the coalition has absolutely no commitment to the rail project. It will not finish it. Only one party in this State is committed to providing a world-class rail service, and that is the Australian Labor Party.
