SCHOOLS —
PARENTAL VIOLENCE
947. Hon JAMES HAYWARD to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to the answer to question
without notice 765, provided on 31 August 2022.
(1) Considering
there are no centrally collated statistics regarding the number of prohibition
orders issued to parents, how can the minister know the extent of the issue
teachers are experiencing?
(2) Can the
minister provide the number of reported parental assaults on teachers in the
period 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022?
(3) Are teachers
being provided with a safe workplace?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. I provide the following answer on behalf of the
Minister for Education and Training.
(1) The director general regularly meets with the
unions and associations and hears directly from them on issues impacting
public schools. The minister meets fortnightly with the director general and
senior officers of the Department of
Education and in these meetings is regularly briefed on a whole range of issues
affecting schools. The minister also
seeks direct feedback from stakeholders, including teachers, at a number of
forums , such as regular meetings with
unions and associations, education forums and school visits across the state.
(2) There have been three.
(3) Robust work
health and safety systems underpin the department's commitment to
support schools in promoting and implementing a safety culture, elevating the
importance of safety beliefs, values and attitudes and promoting collective
responsibility for safety. The department has implemented changes to reflect
the Work Health and Safety Act 2020, with a focus on maintaining safe and
healthy workplaces for employees, students, contractors, volunteers and
visitors. The department has reviewed and updated its bullying policy to
reflect the code of practice for workplace behaviours and provides a suite of
training for all staff in schools on keeping schools safe.
