The Corporations $1 million award winning community partnership program includes education, safety, philanthropic, sports, arts and community initiatives. A key community program is Western Power's support, through the WA Council of Social Services, for customers with difficulty paying Western Power accounts. Western Power's community partnership programs are supported by Western Power people who contribute significant amounts of their own time to community organisations across the State. This includes The Greening Challenge, which has seen over 3.25 million trees planted since the program began in 1996. The program has seen over 2500 Western Power people and their friends and families, planting trees in the Hotham catchment. (2) Western Power is also an Australian leader in the development and implementation of renewable energy technology. In addition to delivering significant renewable energy projects to Western Australia, including the Albany Wind Farm and Denham Wind Diesel project, the Corporation also works closely with community groups within the renewable energy sector. Western Power supported, and worked closely with Solahart, Murdoch University, the WA Alternative Energy Development Board and the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable Energy to construct a pre-production photovoltaic trough concentrator system at Murdoch Universitys Rockingham Campus. Western Power facilitated wind generation at Piney Lakes through the provision of a wind turbine. Western Power also supports the Chair of Renewable Energy at Murdoch University. Western Power officers from the Corporation's Sustainable Energy Branch also regularly provide advice to external parties interested in developing renewable energy infrastructure in Western Australia. Western Power's contribution to various renewable energy projects and programs is in excess of $550,000. This does not account for the considerable in kind support provided, particularly through input from staff on research projects. For example, Western Power officers have contributed in excess of 600 hours of in kind support to the development and operation of the Rockingham Photovoltaic Trough Concentrator System. (3) & (4) Under corporatisation, Western Power's commercial obligations are clearly entrenched in the Electricity Corporation Act 1994. It is not appropriate for Western Power to provide funding to community organisations beyond arrangements that it deems to be in the company's commercial interests. Non-commercial assistance to community organisations is a matter for Government to determine within the budgetary process. Dividend payments from Western Power contribute to the funds available for this purpose.
