ESPERANCE FORESHORE — SAND BYPASSING
I refer to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure’s media statement of 5 March 2008 in which she says of the Esperance foreshore — “We want to provide a more effective long-term plan for providing a wider beach rather than ad hoc deposits of additional sand,” . . . Given that each of the five options to address foreshore erosion put forward by the minister recognised the need for sand renourishment, will the minister commit to sand bypassing to achieve this and cease the dumping of trucked sand on the beach? On behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, I thank Hon Wendy Duncan for some notice of this question. The minister has provided an answer as follows — The ongoing need for sand nourishment along the Esperance foreshore is recognised. The Esperance foreshore erosion steering committee, comprising the Department for Planning and Infrastructure, the Esperance Port Authority, the Shire of Esperance and community representatives, has committed to undertake a feasibility study this year to investigate mechanical sand pumping options to deliver sand to the Esperance foreshore in the long term.
