YANCHEP RAIL EXTENSION — UNEXPLODED
ORDNANCE
1135. Hon BEN DAWKINS to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the Metronet Yanchep rail
line development.
(1) Is the
Department of Fire and Emergency Services' unexploded ordnance service
still the only WA body that is authorised to sign clearance documents for areas
on which the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage has imposed conditions
for unexploded ordnance, or UXO?
(2) What involvement did DFES's
UXO service have in developing —
(a) the UXO survey plans based on
Department of Defence UXO information; and
(b) work safety
practices and procedures to be followed for the safety of contractors and
workers engaged in the Metronet project in the event of the discovery of a UXO?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. I am advised as follows.
(1) The
Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage may refer matters regarding
unexploded ordnance to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for
comment and advice.
(2) In 2017, DFES provided advice relating to two
areas identified as at risk of suspected UXO contamination. DFES
recommended that an investigative survey be conducted by an accredited UXO
contractor.
