OUTCOMES-BASED EDUCATION - EASTERN STATES CURRICULUM
My question is on the recurring theme of outcomes-based education. I refer to the fact that a number of schools have expressed serious concerns about the planned implementation of courses of study in 2007. (1) Is it possible for a school to adopt a curriculum from another state; and, if not, why not? (2) If a school adopts a curriculum from another state, will the government continue to fund that school? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(2) I should have got some clarity on this before I answered it. I do not believe that is possible under the act that governs education in Western Australia. I will get some information to clarify that legal point. However, I advise the member for Darling Range that it will not happen. We are confident that we will be able to resolve the issues that have engaged people’s attention on outcomes-based education over the past few months. If the member was a principal of a school that was concerned about outcomes-based education, he may then have some concerns about adopting the educational model from any other state, because I understand that Western Australia is the last state to adopt an outcomes-based education model.
