CORONAVIRUS — AL
KUWAIT
371. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Is
it important during a state of emergency for a state Premier to take a considered
and methodical approach to dealing with these events to avoid unnecessary
anxiety and fear in the community?

Over
the course of the last three months, I have taken a very serious, concerned and
methodical approach to all matters concerning COVID-19 and its impact on
Western Australia—across the board. We have worked cooperatively with
the commonwealth government, the business community, the social services
sector, and the health sector—with everyone involved, as have many
people across government. Clearly, an email was received about three crew
members who had slightly elevated body temperatures on board the ship on Friday
morning. I think that it should have raised some red flags and there should
have been further action. I also think that the commonwealth should have
communicated —
Mrs L.M. Harvey interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, you have had a question.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I just want
to make my points. I also think that the commonwealth should have communicated by more than just a single email and that there should have been —
Mr A. Krsticevic interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Carine!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I also think
that the commonwealth should communicate by more than just a single email and
there should be more forceful communications, including telephone calls, in
these circumstances. I had a very friendly and amicable chat with Minister
David Littleproud about these matters this morning. I think we were both of the
view that the communication protocols in these situations need to be improved.
None of the crew members came off the ship. The system prevented them from
coming off the ship. I think that this situation shows the value of our
international border arrangements and the value of Western Australia having
isolation. We intend to continue to ensure that we protect Western Australians
as best we can.
