C-series trains
209. Mr Basil Zempilas to
the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the
safety concerns raised by train drivers and the minister's response yesterday
that there are currently no issues with the braking system or automatic speed
functions on the C-series railcars.
Are there currently
any issues with doors opening or closing when they should not, difficulty communicating
using the train radio, platform detection issues and excessive swaying or lateral
movement at speed?

The Leader of the
Opposition is obsessed with running down WA-made trains. Like I said, the
opposition may have funded the Matagarup Bridge, but they said that the welds
were not good enough on the railing. It is internationally recognised as one of
the greatest bridges in the world.
In relation to the
issues raised in the survey undertaken by union members, we are working with
union members on the concerns. But I have to say this again: with the
transition of any new series of railcars, whether it is A, B, or now C-series, there
is a time of adjustment. A lot of it is about making sure that drivers get
across all the new systems and functions and also making sure that we address
their concerns in relation to the cab, the seats, and some of the air
conditioning.
In relation to what
was raised by the Leader of the Opposition, I am very confident in our capacity
to deliver railcars in Western Australia. It was the Liberal Party that refused
to invest in any new trains. Then, when it did, it wanted to buy them fully
imported from overseas. That is why it wants to run it down. As we said, the
Liberal Party does not like public transport; it shut down rail lines, sold
rail lines and increased fares. If it could, it would rip out every rail line
that has currently been laid out. We are proud of our record and we continually
work with union members on the issues they have raised.
