I refer to the answer to my question on notice No. 4340 regarding the potential fracking of the Senecio-2 well and note that a proposal has now been submitted to the Department of Mines and Petroleum regarding this well, and I ask -
(1) What are all the locations in Western Australia that have been approved by the Government for drilling for shale gas, ‘tight’ gas and coal seam gas exploration, including for each exploration lease title -
(a) the proponent’s name(s);
(b) the targeted resource;
(c) the location; and
(d) a description of the status of the project?
(2) For each of the projects listed in the response to (1), please state by item whether fracking is proposed and to what depth?

(1) There is no special approval for shale gas, tight gas or coal seam gas drilling under WA administered petroleum legislation. Drilling approval is given for petroleum wells, which covers oil, conventional gas, shale gas, tight gas and coal seam gas. Companies often have all these as targets.
(2) See above. Although there have been relatively few fracking operations in recent years, there has been a history of over forty years of fracking in the State and it would take considerable time and effort to create a list of the many operations and the details for the intervals fracked.
The first fracking in Western Australia was in 1965 on Barrow Island. There have been 734 fracture stimulations on Barrow Island. Barrow Island is an "A" Class Nature Reserve and there has been no significant environmental damage. In fact, Barrow Island is held up as a significant undisturbed environmental icon.
Other fracking has occurred in the Perth Basin in the Dongara gas field where the first fracture stimulation was conducted in 1974. There have been a total of 21 fracture stimulations in the Dongara field. Adjacent to the Dongara gas field is the Elegans field with one producing well Corybas 1 which was fracture stimulated in 2009.
Other fields that have been fracture stimulated are:
· Gingin Field:- The G-1 well was fracture stimulate in 1971.
· Whicher Range field:- The WR-3 well in 1982, the WR-1 well and the WR-4 wells in 1997 and the WR-5 well in 2003.
· Warro field:- The W-3 well in 2009 and the W-4 well in 2011.
· Yulleroo field:- The Y-2 well in 2011.
