CINEFESTOZ FILM FESTIVAL
987. Hon COLIN HOLT to the minister representing the
Minister for Tourism:
I refer to the funding of the CinefestOz festival held in the
south west each year.
(1) Did the
government withdraw Tourism WA's contribution to the festival's
prize money for 2020?
(2) Why was that decision made?
(3) Will the
$100 000 prize be funded by government next year; and, if not, why not?
(4) When will
the government agree to a new funding contract with CinefestOz for the next
three years?

I
thank the member for the question. The following information has been provided
to me by the Minister for Tourism.
(1)–(2) Tourism
WA and Geographe French Australian Festivals Inc were working towards
finalising a contract for sponsorship of the 2020 CinefestOz. However, on 30 March
2020, Tourism WA was informed that the 2020 event would be cancelled due to the
impact of COVID-19. The GFAFI eventually went ahead with the 2020 CinefestOz
with a combination of virtual and live components. The revised format did not
address Tourism WA's funding criteria for visitation and economic
impact, and the uncontracted event was not funded.
(3) Tourism WA's
board has approved event funding for the 2021 CinefestOz, which will include
funding towards the $100 000 film prize.
Funding will be subject to final approval by the Minister for Tourism and the Minister for Regional Development, as well as a signed sponsorship
agreement between Tourism WA and GFAFI.
(4) When the GFAFI submits a three-year funding
proposal for the 2022–24 CinefestOz events, the government will consider it
through Tourism WA.
