Further to my question of yesterday, it could be months before the workplace violence prevention strategy is in place, can the Minister please advise what is the Government doing now to improve security for nurses in locations where there is not even a police outpost?

As you are aware individual health services have always been responsible for ensuring the occupational health and safety of their staff, and that policies to address these issues are in place at each health service. The initiative announced by the Minister for Health is to improve on these individual site policies and implement best practice. This will include tailored education, awareness and management strategies aimed at enhancing the security and other occupational health and safety outcomes for all staff. In addition to this the Minister for Health has directed the Chief Nursing Officer to individually address this issue with all Regional Directors. Furthermore, the Minister has requested that a process be put in place to enable occupational health and safety representatives to meet one-on-one with nurses and other hospital employees to discuss their safety concerns, and to implement appropriate remedies immediately to address these concerns.
