FARINA to the Attorney General representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the number of police full-time equivalent
vacancies in the south west region.
(1) How many
FTE police positions in the south west region are currently vacant, and what is
the position title for each vacancy?
(2) In
relation to each of the vacancies identified in (1) —
(a) at which stations are the
vacancies located;
(b) in which vacancies are people
currently acting in the positions; and
(c) how long have the positions
been vacant?
(3) Since 1 January,
how many police officers in the south west have worked extra shifts to make up
shortfalls in rosters?
(4) Since 1 January,
how many shifts in the south west have been understaffed due to staffing
shortages?
(5) What action
has the minister taken to address the number of police vacancies in the south
west?

On behalf of the Minister for Police, I thank the honourable
member for some notice of the question.
(1) Nine
patrol inquiry officer positions.
(2) In
relation to each of the vacancies identified in (1) —
(a) There are
three vacancies in Bunbury, three in Australind, two in Collie and one in
Manjimup.
(b) There are
no people acting in the positions.
(c) The
positions became vacant between February and June.
(3) The response
required for this question would take a significant amount of time and
resources to collate and process. It is therefore not possible for police to
obtain this information without significantly compromising other core policing
activities.

continually working to address the vacancy issue in the south west. A range of
strategies are being worked out through attendance at the WA Police Academy to
visit recruits in an attempt to find applicants. The recruiting branch is
running a recruitment strategy for the south west district. A video is being
produced to show recruits and others. A probationary constable will attend the
police academy to talk about his experiences in the south west. Officers from
the south west district are proactively contacting officers.
