TOURISM RESEARCH
AUSTRALIA — FIGURES
689. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
Given the damage to the industry, will the Premier now support the Liberal
Party's policy of taking Tourism WA out of a mega-department, so that
it has the focus and dedicated staff that the tourism industry requires?

It is a silly proposition. We have a
strong jobs agency, and tourism is a key job creator. The idea that we should
unravel what we did in bringing government agencies together is ludicrous. As I
have said before, each state across Australia has fewer government departments
than Western Australia, so there is more focus on service delivery, and less
focus on bureaucracy. As I have probably said before in this house, that
started with Jeff Kennett back in 1993. He
took 30 or 40 Victorian government departments and made them into seven. We
were not that bold, but 25 government agencies is a reasonable number for a state
the size of Western Australia. Having tourism as part of our jobs agency, where
it works together with other job-creating parts of our economy, is a sensible
thing to do. If the member thinks a potential tourist in Chongqing in China is
wondering where the structure of the Tourism Commission of Western Australia
sits within government, and that that will determine whether they come here or
go to Los Angeles or Britain, I think she is dreaming.
