MINERAL ROYALTIES — REVIEW
633. Mr P.C. TINLEY to the
Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
I have a supplementary question. What guarantees can the minister give to the 10 500 employees in the WA
alumina industry that their jobs will be secure when the royalty increases are
introduced?

AnswerView source ↗

The price of alumina
is very low at the moment. I can understand the member's concern. As I
said, I have no preconceived ideas. A review is happening. The last time a
review was done of the royalty system was in 1981. It is reasonable that a
review be done. I think the system is pretty good at the moment. However, there
may be ways in which it can be improved. I am open to any advice on improving
the current system, as anyone should be.
The SPEAKER : Members, thank you for your cooperation today during question time.
Member for Girrawheen, I realised that you did not want to go home early
because you would miss our company. We had a much better question time today;
thank you for your cooperation.
