TWOMEY REPORT — RECOMMENDATIONS
Given the good recommendations contained in the report, why did the minister for so long delay releasing it to the public? Mr M. McGOWAN

AnswerView source ↗

I have released the report and have been open and accountable. Several members interjected. Mr M. McGOWAN : Opposition members seem to be a little bit sensitive today because they have had to have another seating reshuffle. I think what the opposition needs as its leader is a chess grandmaster. Mr M.J. Cowper interjected. The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Member for Murray! Mr M. McGOWAN : Opposition members need a chess grandmaster to be their leader. They need Boris Spassky because, otherwise, how will they work out who should be sitting next to whom? It must be a very difficult task for them to work out which one should be sitting next to another. Ms A.J.G. MacTiernan : It’s like dominoes. Mr M. McGOWAN : Yes, it is also like dominoes. However, there is one Rock of Gibraltar, and it is the bloke who I think will become the leader. He is the one member of the opposition who has not moved seats in the past three years, and he is the member for Darling Range. He is the Rock of Gibraltar upon which the opposition is built, because whatever happens he always stays right in the front row. Several members interjected. The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Minister, I suggest you draw your answer to a close. Mr J.H.D. Day interjected. Mr M. McGOWAN : Come on, Rock, that is enough! Several members interjected. The DEPUTY SPEAKER : The member for Darling Range is called to order for the first time. Mr M. McGOWAN : We have been open and accountable. I have released the report. We are progressively responding to the report. Not more than a week ago the Deputy Leader of the Opposition was asking me to release it and now he is attacking me for doing so.
