LATE-NIGHT
TRAIN SERVICES — PATRONAGE
25. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Transport:
I refer —
Mr
N.W. Morton interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Forrestfield!
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : I refer to the minister's obviously
poorly researched decision to cancel the late-night train service.
(1) How many people need to catch this train service for the minister
to reverse the decision?
(2) Did the minister include in those
calculations the empty trains going back to the city after midnight?
Several members interjected.

These days members opposite chirp up before I even say something.
(1)–(2) It might pay me to remind
members opposite that it was the Labor government in 2001 that shut the 3.00 am
service. Members opposite sit here preaching to this government that it is
doing the wrong thing!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! Members!
Mr D.C. NALDER : I call it the pot calling the kettle black.
Members opposite are always experts. I reiterate that the government has said
that it is not closing this service until April. I have restated the position
to the media. The average patronage is 80 people a train over the year.
Mr B.S. Wyatt : A train, including the empties?
Mr D.C. NALDER : Goodness!
The SPEAKER : Member for Victoria Park, I call you to order for the first time. If
you want to ask a question, put your name down.
Mr D.C. NALDER : I have taken advice from the Public
Transport Authority, which recommended to me that with its low patronage this
service is not justifiable. We have put out there that this service is not
closing until April, but if people want to prove they want the service, they
should do so with their feet and use the service.
Point of Order
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : The question is: what is the average
patronage per train that is required for the minister to restate the service?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : When members are asking questions and
supplementary questions, I do not want to hear any noise. Minister, answer the question.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Mr D.C. NALDER : We have not set the defined number of
patrons. We will monitor it. We will not play a game and after The Giants event go and sit on the 1.15
am train to prove a point. That is ridiculous. We have also said we will
maintain the service for special events. We do not have a defined number of
patrons at this point in time.
