WATER AND RIVERS COMMISSION - WATER RESOURCE ESTIMATES
I refer to question without notice 734, which informs us that the Water and Rivers Commission has not produced an update of the state’s water resource estimates since 2000. (1) Is the minister aware that the figures published as part of the 2000 national water assessment indicated that more than 2 000 gigalitres of sustainable water resources are available for supplying Perth and the south west region? (2) Will the minister table any relevant report that contradicts the water estimates published in 2000; and, if not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes.  However, this assessment was based on very preliminary sustainable yield estimates and did not take account of climate change. (2) An overall review of the state’s water resources is being undertaken as part of the state water plan.  The final draft is due for release in early 2007.
