(1) I have requested that the Department of Indigenous Affairs provide to me a paper on the operation of the Aboriginal Communities Act 1979. The paper may include options for legislative amendment.
(2) The content of any proposed amendments to the Aboriginal Communities Act 1979will depend on the options provided to me by the Department of Indigenous Affairs. Any proposed legislative amendment to the Aboriginal Communities Act 1979requires extensive consultation with all key stakeholders, particularly the Aboriginal communities to which the Aboriginal Communities Act 1979may apply.
(3) Such amendments may be introduced to Parliament if, after extensive consultation with key stakeholders, and on the advice of the Department of Indigenous Affairs it is determined that legislative change is the most appropriate course of action.
