KALGOORLIE DISTRICT EDUCATION OFFICE
The minister would be aware of the very poor educational outcomes in my electorate, especially in the Ngaanyatjarra lands. With that in mind and despite Liberal Party policy, can the minister please end speculation about the long-term future of the district education office in Kalgoorlie? Dr E. CONSTABLE

Members will remember that before the last election the Liberal Party gave an undertaking that it would streamline district education structures. In fact, that has been an ongoing issue and matter that I have been looking at for some time. There are complex issues involved when we look at the districts and how they might be restructured and modernised to bring them up to what we want in a modern education service. The change is aimed at bringing services closer to schools. At the moment there are over 600 full-time equivalents attached to the 14 district offices. I want to see those services placed in schools or closer to schools, including school psychology services, which is a must. Mrs M.H. Roberts : How many are you getting rid of? Dr E. CONSTABLE : I am looking at a number of possibilities at the moment. I stress that this is not a cost-cutting exercise. All resources will remain in schools and for schools and for students and teachers. To answer the member’s question, at no time has it been suggested that the district office in Kalgoorlie will close. It is not an issue that is under consideration.
