Further to the Minister’s reply to the grievance of the Member for Darling Range, Mr A J Simpson MLA on 17 September 2009, in which the Minister stated that some 2,500 people are employed in the native timber industry, will the Minister itemise the full time equivalent numbers employed by the Forest Products Commission in:
(a) felling and hauling;
(b) sawmilling; and
(c) woodchipping?

(a-c) The FPC is not directly involved in sawmilling or woodchipping, although it oversees the most significant supply chain for native forest sawlogs, and plays a lesser role in supplying the woodchip industry. As these operations are integrated it is not possible to provide sectorised employment figures.
At 12 November 2009, the FPC had a total of 39.5 FTEs directly involved in managing the native forest industry in the south-west. Other staff in FPC, and other agencies, support this direct involvement in areas including planning, nursery operations, research, monitoring and administration. However, most of the work in native forest production is actually conducted by contractors.
The most recent, comprehensive and authoritative information on employment in the native forest industry (and other sectors) in Western Australia is available from the Cooperative Research Centre for Forestry (Schirmer, Dr J, Forestry, jobs and spending: forest industry employment and expenditure in Western Australia, 2005-06, CRC for Forestry, October 2008.). This includes a variety of information for different industry sectors and different stages in the supply chain.
