I refer to an article in The West Australian yesterday, which reported that funding for the Joondalup family violence project for women will end in December. I refer to the Government’s election promise to combat domestic violence, which reads - Labor supports the Family Violence Court Pilot in Joondalup and will ensure that the project is adequately resourced . . . Will the Government commit a further 12 months’ funding post-December 2001 for the Joondalup family violence project; and, if not, why not? Ms McHALE

I thank the member for some notice of this question, and for her obvious interest in women’s issues. It is a pity though that her party does not reflect the nature of women’s - Mrs Edwardes: We have got a good record on domestic violence and don’t you tell us otherwise. It is an excellent service and I am sure that the members for Joondalup and Wanneroo will lobby you heavily. Ms McHALE: The member for Kingsley is a little touchy on this. Mr Barnett: You are laughing about domestic violence. Ms McHALE: The Leader of the Opposition is also touchy about this subject, and probably for good reason. This Government is totally committed to women who suffer domestic violence, and has demonstrated that commitment. Domestic violence should be eradicated from our community. Unfortunately, women and, to some extent, men suffer levels of violence that are totally unacceptable, and this should be eradicated from our society. The Government will follow a number of strategies once the budget comes down. Mr Trenorden: Let’s have a review! Ms McHALE: The member for Avon should not be ridiculous. He is talking about another review into domestic violence. That is belittling women in this State. Additional funding will be provided to women’s refuges. We need education programs that will ensure people realise, once and for all, that domestic violence is not tolerated in our community. The Government will look at the level of funding to the Joondalup family violence project. I give this House an assurance that the Government has a 100 per cent commitment to ensuring that the incidence of domestic violence in this community is reduced. It is not tolerated and for far too long women, men and children have had to suffer intolerably.
