Recently, plans for Canning Highway from Petra Street to Glenelg Street have been revised to improve safety and capacity of the road. The revised plans include dedicated cycle lanes, turning pockets, wider verges and bus queue jump facilities at major intersections. A dedicated bus lane is also included east of Riseley Street. The revised road cross-section requires wider reservations that has been formalised through the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) Amendment No. 1100 in 2008. The Amendment is now awaiting Ministerial endorsement.
Similar upgrading of plans for the remaining section of Canning Highway up to the Causeway is in the DPI work program for 2009-10.
These planned improvements will increase road capacity and reduce congestion in the long term.
Analysis of the average run time (weekday services) for route 106 for the month of March 2009 indicates that generally route 106 is operating satisfactorily
Traffic congestion at points along Canning Highway can delay the route 106. While the timetable tries to allow for congestion, the extent of congestion at various points is not always predictable. Primarily the delays and late running on the route 106 services occur during the morning peak periods of 7:30 am and 9:00 am and during the afternoon services between 2:30 pm and 6:00 pm.
