I thank the member for the question. Yes, Western Australia
has done particularly well in the last survey about international travellers to
Western Australia, particularly from three countries. Singapore has had an
increase of 28.9 per cent, or 18 900 visitors; the United States of America is
up by 21.6 per cent, or an additional 12 400 visitors; and Malaysia is up 16.7 per
cent, or 10 100 visitors. Overall in the last 12 months, the number of state
international visitors has grown by eight per cent, and we now receive 13 per
cent of all international visitors, which is a great result. On many occasions
in the past, where would international visitors who wanted to go to Australia
go? They would go to Sydney first, and then Melbourne and Queensland. Western
Australia tended to be last on the list. But this time, 13 per cent of
international visitors came here, with, as I said, growth of eight per cent. It
adds a huge amount to our economy. International visitor spending increased by
6.1 per cent compared with the national average of only 4.6 per cent. That
represents $133 million to $2.33 billion. The state has a goal of getting to
$12 billion by 2020. In the latest survey, we have increased by $300 million
from international visitors, which is now up to $8.6 billion. So we are well on
the way to that target. I am very proud of the work that Tourism WA is doing to
promote Western Australia to international tourists.
