CANNABIS — LEGALISATION
853. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer the minister to recent
developments in Switzerland where the government, concerned at the possible
ramifications of cannabis legalisation, has commenced a one-and-a-half year
trial with 400 participants able to buy cannabis legally, while under strict
and regular monitoring by the University Psychiatric Clinics Basel for any ill
effects. If, as it seems to be, the Cook government is concerned about the
ramifications of legalising cannabis, will it commit to a similar monitored
trial here in Western Australia; and, if not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me
by the Minister for Police.
It is not a priority of the Cook
Labor government to implement a similar trial in Western Australia as there are
existing laws in place regarding cannabis possession and use.
