I refer to the issue of sex offenders being released into the community, the decision to release convicted paedophile Otto Darcy-Searle, and the fact that the Department of Justice provided a report to the Parole Board of Western Australia, the author of which stated that he was unable to support Darcy-Searle’s release on parole given the serious nature of his offences. (1) Will the Premier now give a firm commitment that this convicted sex offender will be returned to prison immediately upon his return to Western Australia and will serve out his term in jail? (2) In relation to sex offenders from other states who are currently on parole in Western Australia, can the Premier guarantee that none of these sex offenders live near young children or vulnerable people? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I urge the member to place the second part of the question on notice to the Minister for Justice. On the first part of the question, it is my view, and that of the government, that the primary concern of the Parole Board should be community safety. That should be the primary concern when Mr Darcy-Searle returns to Western Australia.
