advises:
(1) Main Roads is responsible for designated road side stopping places on the state road network within the Shire of Ashburton. Local Government is responsible for stopping places on the local road network.
(2) See response to (1).
(3) Complaints are received periodically.
(4) The nature of complaints involves litter in the surrounding area, overflowing rubbish bins and vandalism of the site's facilities.
(5) Maintenance standards involve emptying the bins, removing ground litter and reporting and repairing of damaged structures. Main Roads' maintenance contractor visits the rest stops on a fortnightly basis.
(6) To meet the increased use of these facilities by tourists and industry, Main Roads has recently doubled its waste management resources with a second maintenance crew currently operating in the Pilbara region and a new waste management truck to be provided in the near future. In addition, Main Roads is currently negotiating with the Auski roadhouse for the provision of an alternative refuse site. As there is continuing amounts of industrial waste dumped at the rest areas, Main Roads is also currently in negotiations with the offending companies to seek their assistance in ensuring the rest areas and the rubbish bins provided remain for the use of the general public and not for industrial or commercial use.
