❓ A WA parliamentary question raises concerns about Homeswest informing applicants of health risks from Alcoa's Wagerup refinery and requiring them to sign a waiver, questioning the legal implications and information sources.

QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the process by which members of the community make applications to Homeswest for a Homeswest rental property in Yarloop. (1) Is the minister aware that applicants for Homeswest rental properties in Yarloop receive a letter from Homeswest’s regional manager for the south west that informs them of the possible health impacts of emissions from Alcoa’s Wagerup refinery, including a possible increased risk of cancer, and refers applicants to Alcoa as the only source of further specific information? (2) Is the minister aware that applicants are also required to sign a form in front of a witness, indicating that they are aware of the possible health risks involved in choosing to live within the environment surrounding Alcoa’s Wagerup refinery? (3) Will the minister explain the intended legal effects of the letter and the form that applicants are required to sign? (4) Will the minister explain why Homeswest refers applicants to Alcoa for more information and chooses to not refer them to the Department of Health, the Department of Environment or another competent authority? (5) Has Homeswest sought advice from the Department of Health or the Department of Environment on the appropriateness of continuing to rent properties in Yarloop? (6) If yes, what advice has been given and will the minister table any relevant documentation? The PRESIDENT : I note the length of the question and the time. The parliamentary secretary has a discretion if the answer is anything like the question. Hon KATE DOUST
