With reference to Question 378 of 30 May 2006 -
(1) How many hours of physical education involving actual physical activity must students receive in each year from year 1 to year 12?
(2) Why is it taking until 2007 to ensure that all students get at least 2 hours per week of physical activity?
(3) Why aren’t students already receiving such a ridiculously small amount of physical activity?
(4) Whatever happened to the weekly afternoon of sport?
(5) Why isn’t improving the quality of and access to physical education listed in the budget paper initiatives for the coming financial year?
(6) Does the Minister accept any responsibility at all for the dreadful physical condition of our children?

i) It is not possible to determine the number of hours involving physical activity students receive from years 1 to 12. Decisions about the amount of time students engage in physical activity are made at the school level. ii) To meet the mandatory 2 hours per week minium requirement during curriculum time, the Department of Education and Training is providing professional learning and developing curriculum support materials to ensure quality physical activities continue to be delivered. iii) & iv) Students already engage in physical activity as part of their learning programs under the mandated Curriculum Framework. Decisions about the amount of time students engage in physical activity are made at the school level. v) This program is identified on p. 345 of the 2006-07 Budget, "From 2007 all students in Years 1 - 10 will participate in a minimum of two hours of physical activity each week, which must form part of students' learning program." vi) This is the responsibility of all of us, the whole community, and the Carpenter Government is very active in doing something about it. The Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce has been established resulting in a whole-of-government approach to do what is best for children. A comprehensive strategy is being delivered to ensure that all students engage in physical activity while they are at school. I would like to thank all those teachers, parents and volunteers who provide opportunities for students of all ages to participate in physical education activities outside curriculum time - the number of hours spent keeping children active is immense and invaluable.
