QuestionView source ↗

(1) Has consideration been given to allocating funds from the building and construction industry training fund levy reserve to assist ageing workers to retrain for less physically demanding jobs? (2) If yes, what actions will the minister take; and, if no, why not? (3) Are there any state-controlled funds specifically available for the retraining of ageing workers in the construction industry? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The building and construction industry training fund administers a skills enhancement subsidy program that enables workers in the industry to retrain and develop skills in occupations other than their original qualification. The subsidy for supplementary training has been increased from 45 per cent of course costs to 80 per cent of course costs, and is being accessed by a broad range of workers including aged employees. (2) The Building and Construction Industry Training Board will undertake research into the attrition rate of workers generally, and will consider the implementation of strategies if the research identifies specific training needs that require support. (3) The Department of Education and Training administers programs that support the retraining of aged workers, but they are not specifically targeted to the building and construction industry.
